This step by step diy project is about glider bench plans. I have designed this simple glider bench with a stand, so you can relax in your backyard while taking in a breath of fresh air. Make sure you invest in weather resistant lumber, such as cedar or redwood, for a professional result and durability. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. Premium Plans for this project available in the Shop.

The first step of the project is to build the back legs for the glider bench. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to cut the components from 2×4 lumber. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts. Lay the components on a level surface and then lock them together with screws and glue. Align the edges with attention.
Cut the front legs and the horizontal supports from 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports. Align the edges with attention and use 2 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly.
Use 2×4 lumber for the seat frame. Cut the components at the right dimensions. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and assemble the frame together tightly with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.

Assembling the frame of the bench
Attach the sides to the seat frame. Align the edges with attention, making sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs.
Fit 1×4 slats to the seat frame. Align the edges with attention and place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats, to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 1 5/8″ screws into the seat frame.
Fitting the supports
Use 2×4 lumber for the top and bottom backrest supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends and then secure them to the back legs with 2 1/2″ screws.
Fitting the backrest slats
Use 2×2 and 2×3 for the backrest slats. Drill pocket holes at both ends and then use 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly. Use 1 piece of 1 1/4″ wood to create even gaps.
