Indents on personal statement for amcas

Hello everyone,
Why does word tell me I have 5280 characters and the amcas app tells me I am over 5300?
Also, how do you indent? I tried pasting the essay when I used the "tab" key to make indents --> didnt work. Then I entered 5 spaces before each paragragh to make an indent --> didnt work.
How do I indent my paragraphs?

Thanks for help!

you can't indent, just separate paragraphs with an extra line.
and i think enter key is 2 characters or something.

i dunno why it says you are 20 characers over. maybe you double spaced between sentences?

as for pasting and indenting. paste in the whole essay. then go back and instead of creating indents for each paragraph, just start at the margin, and leave one space beween the each paragraph like this:

you dont need to indent because that takes up spaces, and will mess up the format that the adcoms will view your essay in. you can always double check how it looks by printing the essay page from the pdf that is generated when you are ready to submit your app.
